Day Nurseries

This section contains information regarding day nurseries. What is one, what are the benefits and a listing of local day nurseries.

What is a day nursery?
Day nurseries provide care and education for children between the ages of six weeks and five years.
Children will be cared for and grouped together by age and looked after by specific carers. They work to strict adult child ratios and employ qualified staff.

What are the benefits of a day nursery?

  • There will be qualified staff
  • Day nurseries are open most of the year
  • If one carer is sick then there is backup
  • There are lots opportunities for children to learn through play with groups of other children, encouraging sharing and co-operation.
  • Many nurseries offer flexible child care, i.e. wrap around/full day/or sessional

How do I know my child will be safe and secure?
All nurseries must be registered and regularly inspected by the States of Guernsey, who will check to ensure that all staff are suitable to look after children.
There should be one member of staff for every eight children aged 3 to 5, one member of staff for every four children aged 2 to 3 and one member of staff for every three children aged under 2. In addition the premises are inspected for safety. Many day nurseries have successfully completed Quality Assurance Awards.

When are nurseries open?
Opening hours usually range between 8.00am to 6.00pm . Most nurseries are open all year round except for public holidays.

What about part-time childcare?
Many nurseries are happy to offer you part-time places.

How much does a nursery cost?
Expect to pay between £175 and £250 per child per week in Guernsey for full time care. However, these costs would generally include either, one, two or three meals and snacks, depending on the amount of time the child was at the nursery for.

Availability of Places
Most nurseries on the Island, generally, have a waiting list for places. This will depend on the days and hours that you will need the care for, of course. Therefore, you would be wise to visit all the nurseries you may have short listed in your area and if you are then keen on this option, ensure that you get your child registered as soon as possible. Places for babies can be harder to get on the Island and therefore first time parents may want to look at this option before the birth of the child.
