Treatment Options & Locations

An outline of Treatment Options available, both in Guernsey and off-island. Weblinks to UK clinics are also available here.

Some initial treatments are available in Guernsey and are seen as first level attempts at boosting your likelihood for pregnancy.  They all have their own particular stresses and don't underestimate your feelings when undertaking them.  Just because they aren't 'IVF', it doesn't mean that you aren't experiencing similar stresses and physical strains.  Follow your feelings and seek help and support if you need it.

The UK (or further afield) based treatments do take their toll on you and your partner so be prepared.  It's a tough journey, but worth every moment if successful.  Keep informed, don't feel awkward about asking questions at all times.  It's your body, your emotions - take as much control as you can.  Be aware that you may have to give yourself injections (or maybe your partner will) and medication can make you feel really bloated and can, on occasion, cause serious medical problems.  Keep informed and know what you are dealing with.  The more mentally and physically prepared you are, the better you will handle the whole process.

Guernsey based

Clomifine Treatment – these are tablets (also known as Clomid) which cause an increase in the level of female hormones which control the development and release of an egg.  It is used to stimulate ovulation in women whose infertility is due to problems with ovulation.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) – sperm are inserted directly into your uterus via a thin tube at the time of ovulation.

Superovulation - FSH (Folicle Stimulating Hormone) injections stimulate the production of more than one egg.

Off-island

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) – eggs and sperm combined and the resulting embryo/s inserted into your uterus.

GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer) – eggs and sperm combined and placed into your fallopian tubes – fertilisation happens inside the body with natural embryo implantation.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) – a single sperm is injected directly into a single egg and the resulting embryo is inserted into your uterus.

Sperm Donation – the use of donated sperm, via IUI (see above)

Egg Donation – the use of donated egg, mixed with partner’s sperm and resulting embryo is implanted into your uterus.

Considerations – cost, availability of accommodation (? Near family, cost of hotel or B&B), travel implications (how quickly and easily can you get there – will you have to do several journeys – allowing for weather, flight delays etc when you have to be available on specific days), waiting lists
