Treatment – Self funded; depending on the treatments you require, the cost can range from approximately £3,000 - £10,000 per attempt.
Medication – paid for by the States of Guernsey
Travel – paid for by the States of Guernsey
Accommodation – Self funded; decide whether you want a hotel, B&B or whether to find a treatment centre near family or friends so you can be supported by them.
Employment – You need to consider the ability for paid leave, unpaid leave, holiday in which to take these treatments - sessions can take individual days for investigations and potentially 2 week periods of off-island treatment.
Emotional – You need to think about yourself, your relationship with your partner, family and friends – who do you tell? What levels of support do you need? Do you need a support network outside of friends and family?
Physical – Are you able to handle the self-administration of injections? Think about possible risks involved in treatment - hyperstimulation (overproduction of eggs) and the pain and discomfort.
Employment – do you tell your employer, do you need to take extra precautions at work - depending on the type of work you do?
Licence implications – Are you the licence holder? How do you feel about the prospect of returning to work after a successful pregnancy after all the trials of getting pregnant.
The Guernseymums.gg chatroom has a forum particularly devoted to IVF. There are three sub-forums: i) pre-treatment, ii) during treatment, and iii) post-treatment (successes and failures) – find local people to talk to in anonymity. Click HERE to access the chatroom.
There is an option to exchange personal notes and perhaps meet up with those in the same situation.
