Schools List

This section gives you information primarily regarding Primary education within the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

With the exception of four private schools in Guernsey, the remaining seven are States run with very good reputations and in the main are Parish schools, some having been in existence for well over 100 years.  Class sizes tend to be between 18 - 27 pupils for each group. This will depend on the school and of course the size of the intake year.  They are unlikely to go above this number.

It is a local statutory requirement for children to be attending local school by the of 5 years.  This includes those that will be 5 during their first year at school, therefore there are a good proportion of children who are 4 years old when they start in Reception year.

Most Primary Schools age range is roughly from 5 - 11 years.  The children will spend approximately 6 years in Primary School.  These years are split into 3 key stages called: Foundation Stage (3 - 5 years old), Key Stage 1(6 - 7 years old) and Key Stage 2 (7 - 11 years old).

The Eleven Plus system is used in Guernsey to stream children.  It enables the highest marked pupils to gain optional bursaried entrance into local private Senior Schools. Those children who did less well are streamed in accordance with their marks into local Grammar Schools or the States Secondary Schools.
